What Are Implant Dentures?
Getting implant dentures means having sturdy implant posts inserted into your jaw. These posts will eventually act as the foundation for a full denture that has been personalized based on the needs of your specific mouth. Attaching dentures to dental implants helps prevent unwanted movement and also provides additional chewing power.
When you commit to getting implant dentures, our team will give you our recommendation for whether they should be removable or fixed in place. Below is an overview of what you need to know about each option.
Fixed/Permanent Implant Dentures
A fixed implant denture is meant to stay in the mouth at all times; you won’t be able to take it out on your own. Many patients like the fact that fixed implant dentures can be brushed and flossed like natural teeth, which can make maintaining them easier. However, they also usually require a greater number of implant posts to support them – typically between 4 and 8.
Removable Implant Dentures
A removable implant denture is designed in a way that lets you take it out of your mouth at any time. This allows you to clean the gum tissue that is normally hidden under the prosthesis. Removable implant dentures generally only need about 2 to 5 implant posts to hold them in place.
The Implant Denture Process
The process will begin with an initial consultation, where our team will make sure that you’re a candidate for implant dentures and determine whether preparatory treatments such as bone grafting are required. When your jaw is ready, the implant posts will be surgically inserted into the bone. They’ll gradually form a lasting bond with the jaw, after which we’ll attach metal connectors called abutments to them. The last step is designing your new dentures and using the abutments to secure them to the posts.
Am I a Candidate for Implant Dentures?
As long as your mouth is free of gum disease and your jaw has plenty of bone density, you are likely a candidate for implant dentures. Some patients might not qualify for the treatment at first, but they may become candidates if they undergo the appropriate preliminary treatments. That said, the only way to confirm whether implant dentures are viable in your case is to schedule a consultation with our team.
Benefits of Combining Dentures & Dental Implants
Implant dentures are known to have a very lifelike feel and appearance. Furthermore, they will allow you to eat almost any kind of food, and they can help fight jawbone deterioration due to the implant posts fulfilling the same functions as natural tooth roots. And, of course, there’s the longevity of dental implants to consider; with the right maintenance, they can last for over 30 years or even the rest of your life.
