Dental Implant Expectations: What Happens at a Consultation?

If you’re seeking a reliable way to replace one or more missing teeth, you might benefit from dental implants. Unlike dentures and bridges, these restorations are placed directly in your jaw and eventually fuse with the bone. As a result, they tend to be stronger and longer-lasting than the alternatives.

However, you must consult your dentist before proceeding to ensure you’re a good candidate. If you’re feeling anxious about your upcoming appointment or don’t know what to expect, continue reading to learn about 5 things that typically occur during these visits!

Step #1: Update Your Medical History

You might think of your oral health as separate from the rest of your body, but your dentist needs to know your medical history to avoid doing anything that might cause adverse reactions.

Your dental team will likely begin by having you fill out forms to update your medical history. They might include questions about any medical diagnoses, procedures, prescription medications, and supplements that you’re currently taking. They’ll also take time to discuss your individual concerns and goals regarding the condition of your smile.

Step #2: Examine Your Mouth

Next, your provider will examine your teeth and gums to determine your current dental status. Issues like cavities and gum disease can potentially contribute to implant failure, so they’ll treat any areas of concern they find to help ensure a successful procedure.

Step #3: Take Images

Many patients don’t realize that their jawbone starts thinning when teeth go missing. Your dentist will need to take X-rays or other scans to ensure that it’s thick enough to support your new restoration(s).

If your oral healthcare provider finds that the foundation of your mouth is too frail to proceed, don’t lose hope! In some cases, an additional bone graft procedure can strengthen it.

Step #4: Make Treatment Plan

Once your dentist has compiled information about your medical history and current dental condition and has completed the necessary imaging, they can devise a treatment plan to meet your unique needs.

For example, based on the number of missing teeth, they might recommend a single dental implant, an implant-supported bridge, or a set of dentures to replace multiple teeth.

Step #5: Answer Any Questions

Your dentist will take the time to walk you through the details of their suggested solution, including any additional procedures that might be required, the anticipated timeline, and how to care for your new teeth following their placement.

This is also an ideal time to raise any questions or concerns you have about the procedure. For instance, you might ask how to prepare for your surgery or whether they think you’ll need to take time off work to recover afterward.

Most providers are happy to share as much information as needed to help you feel comfortable and confident moving forward!
